Their voyage of discovery on the path to True Enlightenment (or to put
it another way - Who, When, How, What.... and most importantly.... WHY?????):
Initially formed in 1987, After Dark is a duo comprising Anthony Castleman
(vocals and guitar) and Martin Reeves (guitar and vocals). At the time
of their first meeting both were gainfully employed by Homebase Limited
with varying degrees of success. A mutual interest in tuneful songs resulted
in a few tentative jamming sessions becoming a full blown gigging partnership.
Their launch onto a largely unsuspecting and undeserving public was masterminded
by Dave Swan, Surrey impresario, musician, knob twiddler and drumming
tour de force. Performing in Surrey and it's close environs (save for
a brief excursion to 'play The Isle of Wight') the pub and club audiences
were soon aware that they were, indeed, being treated to a rather good
set of popular, slightly more obscure and downright odd choices of songs.
However, as has been said many times before ... all good things must pass,
and for After Dark this happened in the early 1990s and for all the usual
reasons (egos, guitar solos and non-sharing of Polos - not really, but
they do rhyme!).
Separate paths ensued. Variously they formed new duos, fronted rock bands,
travelled the world, settled down to boring, child-laden middle age but
both found their thoughts returning to After Dark. The die was cast and
after a few chance meetings they decided to stop fighting the inevitable
and join up again.
And so to today. Anthony, a youthful 30-odd, still carries a tune with
conviction. His left-handed guitar playing has been honed and still complements
Martin's right-handed guitar playing. (It adds symmetry to the stage arrangement
you know.) Martin, a slightly less youthful 'but-still-has-his-own-full-head-of-hair'
at 40-odd, continues to play, sing and learn.
Their repertoire includes songs by the Beatles, Crowded House, Richard
Ashcroft (and the Verve), the Stereophonics, David Gray.... and just about
any other tuneful songsmith you care to think of. They play pubs, clubs
and special occasions, tailoring their sets to suit each venue, and if
you've got a special request (and give enough notice!) they'll even try
to incorporate it.
If it's a rattling good evening of excellent songs, banter and audience
participation, look no further; After Dark are here to help!
